There are many facets to selecting the correct eyewear and we will
gladly help you make your selection. Just a few of the things we take into
consideration are size, shape, color, what material the frame is made of,
what material the lens is made of, what options to consider when
choosing a particular style of lens, and which coatings would be
appropriate for the intended use of your new glasses. We will properly fit
you with eyewear that meets or exceeds your lifestyle needs. And of
course the most important consideration is, are you happy with your
choice. In most cases you will be wearing your glasses everyday and we
want you to look good as well as feel good about your choices. In some
cases it may be better to have several pairs of glasses to manage
varying needs or requirements. Especially if you need safety glasses at
work, or working in the yard or maybe for hobbies that may require
shatter resistant lens. We can also suggest sports glasses for golf or
numerous contact sports. Maybe a back up pair of dress wear glasses
for those unforeseen accidents, or to take on your next trip. And most
people will want a pair of sunglasses.
After you receive your new glasses we will ensure that they are correctly
adjusted to fit as intended. And help to keep them in good condition and
Some of the frame materials are;
- Plastic, sometimes referred to as “Zyl”, it’s light, colorful and in
most cases is hypoallergenic.
- Monel, the majority of frames are made out of this combination of
- Stainless steel, light and sturdy.
- Titanium, hypoallergenic and depending on the style one of the
- Titanium alloy or flex titanium, again very light and with the ability
to flex in different directions it is one of the most durable frame
All of these different eyeglass frame materials are made in different
- Full frame metal or plastic, this is when the lens is completely
encompassed within the frame.
- Rimlon, which will have a portion of the lens held into the frame
with a nylon string or metal wire.
- Three piece mount or Frameless, which gives the appearance of
not having a frame although the lens is held in place with bridge
bar and temple hinge using various mounting methods.
There are many options to take into consideration when selecting
eyeglass lens designs or style;
- Progressive lens ( P.A.L. progressive additive lens), also called a
no-line bi-focal, which is erroneous because a bi-focal implies
only “two” (bi) focal lengths. The progressive lens has numerous
focal lengths between the reading area and the area for distance
thus allowing you to focus at any focal length between reading
and infinity or distance.
- Bi-focals. as the name implies, has two focal areas. They can
come in different shapes and widths, the most popular and most
recognizable is the flat top, or straight top 28 millimeter style.
This also comes in a round segment style, and both come in
different widths. The flat top bi-focal looks like a capitol “D” lying
on its side. The majority of the lens is for distance use, where as
the “D” segment is used for close up magnification such as
- Tri-focals. the big difference between this an the “Bi-focal” is the
addition of an intermediate magnification segment above the bi-
focal. This allows for focusing between approximately 18 to 24
- Occupational progressive or Variable focus lens. Sometimes
called computer lens. These lenses are dedicated for use at
your computer. The difference is the “occupational progressive”
lens has a very minimal distance vision area, which will suffice
for temporary distance use, but not constant distance use. The
“variable focus lens” does not have any usable distance
prescription, but as with the “occupational progressive” does
have a wide intermediate and near vision area. Both of these
lens styles make long term intermediate and near use very
comfortable drastically cutting down on computer vision
- Single vision lens for reading or driving “distance”. As the name
suggests it is primarily for one distance. Either for distance, near,
or intermediate. Sometimes one power will allow acceptable use
for different focal lengths.
These lenses can be made in many types of materials;
- Plastic “CR 39”, which works well for lower power prescriptions.
It is less expensive but much heavier and thicker than other
materials. Scratch resistance is an additional charge.
- Polycarbonate, approximately 40% thinner and lighter than
“Plastic CR 39” lens and comes with scratch resistant coating
- Trivex, approximately 25% thinner and lighter than “Plastic CR
39” lens and comes with scratch resistant coating automatically.
- Hi-index, this refers to the index of refraction, or the ability of a
lens material to bend light the same as “Plastic CR 39” but in a
shorter distance. This allows the lens to be up to 50%, thinner
and lighter than “Plastic CR 39”. These are also automatically
scratch resistant coated.
Eyeglass lens coatings and options
- Anti-reflective coating, this coating is beneficial for everyone. In
particular for night driving, extended periods using computers
and reading. It also has cosmetic attributes due to the drastic
reduction of glare, so when you are interacting with others they
will see your eyes instead of the numerous points of glare and
reflections which normally are inherit with eyeglasses.
- Scratch resistance coating, no lens are scratch proof, but a
scratch resistant coating will help to prevent scratching from
- Photochromic lens, change from clear lens to tinted brown or
gray lens. They require ultraviolet light to trigger the change and
will go back to a clear state once removed from ultraviolet
- Ultraviolet protection coating (UV), helps to prevent harmful
ultraviolet rays from damaging your eyes. Ultraviolet rays are
thought to cause cataracts and other retinal damage. UV
protection is particularly important for young developing eyes.
- Tint, solid or gradient, can help to protect your eyes from the
harsh brightness of the sun, or to highlight objects for driving or
sporting events. There are different colors and darkness levels to
help protect or accentuate different activities.
- Polarized lens, have a filter that blocks reflected light making
them especially good for use on the water. But also work
especially good for driving and many outdoor sports. Although
they sometimes will not work well with L.E.D. lights for the
display will appear to be blank due to the polarization filter.
We can do most minor eyewear repairs in office while you wait. If it should
prove to be a major repair problem beyond our capabilities we have other
options. In some cases it may be advantageous monetarily to replace
rather than repair. We will be glad to look at your glasses and make a
suggestions as to what we feel would be your best course of actions.

In developing nations the number of people needing basic eye care
services reaches into the millions. To help correct this problem we accept
eyeglass donations for the Lions Club who will distribute them to those in
need at home and abroad. Help someone with the gift of site. Please
donate any eyeglasses that you no longer use. Help fulfill the basic ability
for a child to read, or an adult to retain a job.
